For a long time, European integration policy has paid little attention to the question of what unites Europeans, i.e. to European identity. But without a convincing answer to this question, it is unlikely that internal cohesion will be ensured in a further enlarging EU. In the meantime, interest in this question has certainly increased. But popular answers are not convincing if they ignore the importance of religion, and first and foremost Christianity, in the emergence and development of European culture. According to the thesis of the conference, it will not be possible to develop a common identity for the whole of Europe without a cultural renewal that rediscovers this common Christian tradition and rethinks it for today.
