Messa DI gloria - opera
Composed by Puccini three years before his first opera, the Messa di Gloria is his most ambitious early work and one of his rare compositions of sacred music. Premiered in 1880 in Lucca Cathedral, it was a great success. But Puccini did not publish the score, which fell into oblivion until its rediscovery in 1951. He would nevertheless reuse certain themes from this mass in his operas Manon Lescaut and Edgar. Revealing great inventiveness of writing and a rare melodic sense, this work foreshadows Giacomo Puccini's theatrical genius.
