Between evening and morning - chamber music
Mel Bonis, pseudonym of Mélanie Bonis (1858-1937) is one of the rare French composers of her time who left a substantial musical body of work to posterity. This Parisian, from a modest bourgeois background, studied at the Conservatoire on the same benches as Debussy and Pierné. Her personal life was marked by painful trials – a forced marriage, a child born out of wedlock, her guilt – which sharpened her sensitivity and inspired her creativity. Very varied, often vigorous and sensual, always very well written and of great sensitivity, the music of Mel Bonis is of a personal writing and easily identifiable by the originality of the harmonies and rhythms. Between 1900 and 1910, the post-romantic composer enjoyed a certain notoriety in the Parisian musical world, but in the last part of her life, the competition from modern composers brought her back into the shadows. This concert offers a glimpse of his repertoire of chamber music for violin and piano, framed by pieces by his contemporaries. With a carefully considered interpretation that is at once clear, sensitive and committed, Sandrine Cantoreggi and Sheila Arnold transport the audience to the heart of Mel Bonis' art, and through its many facets.
