What happens when writers speak out publicly? Does their voice carry beyond their books? And what does 'publicity' mean in a time when anonymous social networks increasingly replace argumentative criticism? Elise Schmit and Guy Rewenig regularly speak out in the media. Reactions to their articles and op-eds often verge on a shitstorm. How do they handle this experience? Or put differently: can people who work with language assert themselves in an environment where the essence of language is deliberately destroyed by fake news? Using examples from their 'polemical practice,' Elise Schmit and Guy Rewenig show how they take a stance. They discuss with Henning Marmulla whether writers are welcome in the public debate or rather seen as troublesome agitators.
