Italy, rich in art and culture with a mild climate, attracted artists from foreign countries, especially northern ones, for centuries. In the 17th century, many Dutch and Flemish artists, including in cities like Rome and its surrounding countryside, settled there to live and paint. Around 1640, some specialized in landscape painting, a genre that became popular from around 1600. Artists like Jan Both, Adam Pynacker, Jan Asselijn were part of local communities. The most well-known was the Roman Bentvueghels, to which Pieter Bodding van Laer belonged, gathering the Bamboccianti group around him. Upon returning to the Netherlands, these artists, like Cornelis van Poelenburgh, painted Italianate landscapes with mythological, pastoral, or biblical scenes. Their style also influenced contemporaries like Nicolaes Berchem and Jan Wijnants. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to compare the works of the main representatives of the long-unrecognized Dutch Italianists. The paintings come from a Luxembourgish private collection and have never been publicly exhibited.
