Tonight: Lola Blau is an extraordinary play that tells the story of a young stage artist's career beginning at the time of Austria's annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938. Lola Blau goes into exile in Switzerland and then America, becomes famous, loses her illusions, and returns to Vienna after the war. Since its premiere in 1971, the play remains relevant. The cabaret songs by the great composer, singer, and poet Georg Kreisler (1922-2011) span from virtuoso comedy to poignant tragedy. "Lola Blau" is a tale of powerlessness. Lola feels helpless against anti-Semitism as against her Jewish identity. She is powerless in front of stubborn Swiss, raging against the sex-career in America, and finally against the Austrian never-changers. She wishes for nothing more than to dance and sing, bringing joy to her audience, but she must realize that everyone must strive to remove obstacles blocking the sun. Georg Kreisler set new standards for literary cabaret, with songs that are incisive, bizarre, and political, disturbing, seducing, and awakening.

In 1938, Lola Blau packs her suitcase, ready for her first theatrical engagement. She openly admits her political ignorance, passion for theater, and love for Leo. Marked by the yellow star, she must go into exile. From the Berlin cabaret of the 1920s to the American club songs of the 1940s, humor and irony portray her life, resembling our own era today.
