Devotions presents a program co-designed by Ema Nikolovska and Kunal Lahiry, in which singing itself proves to be a mediator, going from macro- to microscopic representations: from evocations of the natural world to the embodiment of the human voice in all its fragility. Starting with historical and contemporary music and poetry, the program offers a collage of styles – from lied to vocalise, and three contemporary pieces – which, through their juxtapositions, raise questions on nature, ephemerality, death, and transfiguration to the audience. Overall, what do these songs say about each other and our relationship to nature, seen as both threatening and inspiring or as consolation and escape? The audience is encouraged to discover their own perspective, as the primary intention is to create an experience of stream of consciousness in which listeners can forge their connections and perhaps renew their relationship with existing repertoires. Music by Aaron Copland, Emily Doolittle, George Crumb, Olivier Messiaen, Priaulx Rainier, Franz Schubert, Sergey Prokofiev, Nahre Sol, and Héloise Werner. Featuring Ema Nikolovska (mezzo-soprano) and Kunal Lahiry (piano).
