Since the 1980s, teenagers have played a central role in both high school films (Fast Times at Ridgemont High, 1982 and Clueless, 1995) and horror cinema (Halloween, 1978 and A Nightmare on Elm Street, 1984). The lecture examines the moral concepts and themes of growing up portrayed in these films: it highlights not only the narratives and key locations (such as high schools, shopping malls, the remote cabin in the woods, etc.) of teenage years, but also the recurring characters and associated stereotypes — like "the diligent one", "the athlete", "the virginal", "the shy one", and other film characters — that have significantly shaped the portrayal of youth culture in American cinema over the past decades. Special attention is given to the popular cultural influence that gender role representations have had on the target audience.
