Last book before Christmas break! Next one in January. This book has been recommended by some members of the book club. It is very rare for us to read a book by the same author twice, but it is also rare for an author to win the Pulitzer Prize twice.
We are about to read one of the best books written in recent years on the history of America. The Underground Railroad is a historical fiction novel by American author Colson Whitehead, published in 2016. It tells the story of Cora, a slave in the South during the 19th century, who escaped from her Georgia plantation by following the Underground Railroad. Cora is being pursued by a relentless slave catcher called "calculating" to 'return' Cora back to the plantation from where she fled.
This novel has many influences, including the story of Harriet Tubman, the abolitionist and political activist, who is considered the most famous conductor of the Underground Railroad. The book by Colson Whitehead also inspired the TV series The Underground Railroad produced in 2021.
I highly recommend the book "Harriet Tubman" by Ann Petry, foreword by Jason Reynolds, for those who want to know more about this story. The Underground Railroad is available in libraries in Luxembourg. You just need a library card, which you can get for free in any library.
