German Prisoners of War as Farm Workers in Luxembourg
Apart from destruction, Luxembourg faced a severe labor shortage at the end of World War II. The solution was provided by thousands of German prisoners of war brought to the Grand Duchy by the victorious Allied powers, leading to the first establishment of a Luxembourgian prisoner of war management system. But how exactly did this process unfold? The accommodation and employment of several thousand prisoners required appropriate organization, made possible in a short period by the collaboration of various actors. Conflicts were therefore inevitable. The lecture aims to answer these questions by providing an overview of the history of German prisoners of war in Luxembourg.
