Everything has gone on without me. I do not know what has happened. Hamm survived the global catastrophe and now tyrannizes Clov, the other survivor. The world is barren and empty, the civilization crumbles, yet within this apocalyptic chaos, there is humor.
The protagonist Hamm is not only paralytic but also blind. He is dependent on Clov, his servant, whom he continually harasses. Rituals devoid of meaning and insults are what pass the time for Hamm.
Yet, Clov is aware of the mutual dependency too, as only Hamm knows how to access food. If Hamm were to follow through with his threat to withhold food, both would die. Endgame is regarded as a masterpiece of the Theatre of the Absurd and goes far beyond. Samuel Beckett demonstrates a man thrown back to his mere existence, his unyielding loneliness, and his last tiny hope of being able, ultimately, to stick his head out of the sand.
Endgame is a caustic, grotesque, comic text – just like life.
