Duty of Remembrance: Essential Means to Combat the Far Right and Anti-Semitism
Simon Gronowski was born in Brussels on October 12, 1931. His mother and his seven-year-older sister died in Auschwitz. His father died in despair on July 9, 1945. Simon was eleven years old when he was arrested on March 17, 1943, thrown into a Gestapo basement on Louise Avenue in Brussels, detained for a month at the Dossin Barracks in Mechelen, and deported on April 19, 1943, in a cattle car of the 20th convoy carrying 1600 Jews from Mechelen (Belgium) to the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp. Miraculously, he jumped from the train and escaped. All of this happened solely because his parents were born into the Jewish faith. In 1945, Simon found himself alone in the world… Simon Gronowski Lawyer, author, jazz pianist.
