Beyond the Naked Eye – The Cubism of Georges Braque
In Les Peintres Cubistes (1913), Guillaume Apollinaire writes, "Above all, artists are men who want to become inhuman. They painstakingly seek out traces of inhumanity, traces that are nowhere to be found in nature." Since the Renaissance, painting sought to represent nature "realistically," but cubism, developed by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso, aimed to transcend the limits of human perception to depict a deeper reality, beyond what is visible to the naked eye. Georges Braque's Le Grand Nu (1907-1908) marks a turning point in this new way of seeing the world. This lecture focuses on this emblematic painting within the context of Braque's work, and more broadly, the emergence of cubism.
