Ladies Football Club Stefano Massini in French language with Eugénie Anselin. Directed by Christine Muller. Set and costumes by Sophie Van den Keybus. Lighting and assistance by Antoine Colla. A production of Théâtre du Centaure in co-production with CAPE-Centre des Arts Pluriels Ettelbruck.
How were women's football clubs born? Somewhere in England, during the First World War, when men were sent to fight in the war... At that time, in an armament factory, during their lunch break, eleven female workers started kicking a ball. The managers and priests were dismayed when they began to form a team, then to face others. Thanks to the absence of men, women's football clubs were born and quickly attracted public enthusiasm. Each player found a place on the field, sometimes despite herself, and took her destiny in hand. Their new pastime allowed them to survive the war and be the protagonists of their lives, during the war. When the men returned from the front, the State banned women's football clubs... until 1971. Stefano Massini's Ladies Football Club tells a true conquest for women through solidarity and empowerment through the collective. Depicting the intertwined destinies of female footballers, it reveals the story of the birth of women's football, as women appropriated the sport despite hostile reception. It is therefore a story of defiance that characterizes women's football.
