Is it permissible to play reggae without Jamaican roots? And should libraries be cleansed of Immanuel Kant's writings because the philosopher expressed racist ideas in his early works? Identity politics is a contentious topic worldwide: 'Wokeness' and 'Cancel Culture' have become buzzwords not only for the new right but also provoke divisions within the political left. The American philosopher Susan Neiman has long identified as a leftist, but since when did the left become woke? In her analysis, she explores how contemporary voices that label themselves as leftist have surprisingly abandoned the convictions that are crucial for the leftist standpoint: a commitment to universalism, the belief in the possibility of progress, and the clear distinction between power and justice. Susan Neiman was born in 1955 in Atlanta, Georgia. She studied philosophy at Harvard University and the Free University of Berlin and was a professor of philosophy at Yale University and Tel Aviv University. In 2000, she took over as director of the Einstein Forum in Potsdam. Neiman's work focuses on moral philosophy, political philosophy, and the history of philosophy. In collaboration with the Fondation Robert Krieps.
