Did the Transylvanian Saxons originally come from Luxembourg?
The exact origin of the German-speaking population settled in Transylvania since the 12th century, known as 'Transylvanian Saxons', has long been disputed. In the late 18th century, a traveler from Luxembourg noticed similarities between his language and the idiom he heard in Transylvania. Since then, the 'Luxembourg theory' has spread among Transylvanian intellectuals.
This lecture will trace the connections between Luxembourg and the German-speaking population in Transylvania and discuss whether the exact origin of this group can indeed be determined after almost a millennium. Finally, the Banat will be briefly examined, where German-speaking settlers, including those from Luxembourg, settled mainly during the time of Maria Theresa.
