A requiem for a concert hall?
Johannes Brahms' vast composition never had a religious purpose but was conceived from the outset for the concert hall. A German Requiem occupies a special place in the composer's creation and the history of the genre: it makes its own selection of texts instead of the traditional canon, chooses German instead of Latin, Protestant worship instead of Catholic, and consolation instead of sadness. A hymn to humanity!
