Alexandrian Fado - Theater
In Fado Alexandrino, António Lobo Antunes plunges us into a composite time, triggered by the movement of recollection. Five characters, former soldiers from the African war ten years prior, gather for what seems like a Last Supper of reflection on an era and its mourning. The narrative stages a contemporary depiction of Portugal’s history with a mise en abyme of the last forty years, intertwining four eras: the Estado Novo, memories of the colonial war in Mozambique, the Carnation Revolution, and post-revolutionary Portugal. It's an allegory about the fate of being Portuguese, with language that is stark, raw, and brutal. The actors tread a line of tension and balance, embodying an elusive historical memory.
