The Impossible Desires of Bacon
What is queer in the art of Francis Bacon? "Three Studies for a Portrait of George Dyer" was painted shortly after the two artists met and at the peak of Bacon's passion for the East End petty criminal. Despite its unique characteristics, the triptych illustrates how Bacon's portraits bring human flesh to the surface, exposing pulsations and emotions that societal norms deem impossible and insist must remain hidden in darkness.
