After the international success of her adaptation of Wild Palms, Séverine Chavrier returns to the words of William Faulkner, with a new creation, adapted from one of his most masterful novels, Absalom, Absalom!.
Published in 1936, Absalom, Absalom! tells the story of three families in the American South before, during and after the Civil War, and is particularly centered on the existence of the character Thomas Sutpen. The latter arrives in the imaginary county of Yoknapatawpha (Mississippi) and establishes a large plantation there, with the hope of creating his dynasty there. Very quickly, his ideal turns into failure. The relations, marked by contempt between blacks and whites, alcoholism, sexual abuse, become complex and go as far as incest. His daughter falls in love with Charles Bon, who turns out to be her hidden half-brother, which triggers the rage of Henry, their other brother. This fratricidal hatred then completes the long and inexorable fall of Thomas Sutpen's empire.
Inspired by a biblical episode, this text, which unfolds in a multitude of fragmented stories, tells the vain plan of a man thirsty for social recognition. Séverine Chavrier, accompanied by her regular collaborators, Louise Sari on the scenography, the videographer Quentin Vigier and the eclectic and virtuoso musician Armel Malonga, creates here a true American tragedy.
