Film Debate: Schwaarze Schnéi (Original Version LU)

Schwaarze Schnéi, the first Luxembourgish documentary on the Nazi concentration camp system, was directed by Maisy Hausemer and A.F.O. in 1985 to mark the 40th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. This film centers on the testimonies of 26 Luxembourg survivors of concentration camps, including survivors of the Shoah detained at Auschwitz. By focusing on exchanges between representatives of various groups persecuted by the Nazis and their experiences in the camps, the work raises the question of how and why we should remember Nazi crimes decades after the end of the war. This question is particularly pressing today, 80 years after the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, as the last witnesses of that time pass away.
The film screening will be followed by a discussion between Marc Schoentgen, Historian and Director of ZpB, and Steve Hoegener, teacher and collaborator of ZpB, on the genesis and impact of the film in the 1980s, its relevance today, and the evolution of the memory of the Second World War and the Shoah since then.
