Floods and droughts are among the most serious natural disasters today - and the repeated failure of modern societies to effectively anticipate these dangers is often due to neglecting to look into the past. Instrumental measurements typically only cover the last 200 to 300 years and therefore provide an incomplete picture of climate change. These data gaps can lead to serious misjudgments - as the catastrophic flooding of the nearby Ahr River in 2021 clearly shows. Indeed, while statistical models considered the event to be extremely rare (every 2,000 to 10,000 years), model-based reconstructions based on historical water traces prove that comparable floods already occurred in 1804 and 1910.

The new temporary exhibition "Cours d'eau et climat du Luxembourg au fil du temps" sheds light on this issue using historical instruments, documents and meteorological and climatic records dating back more than 175 years and offers a unique opportunity to discover the evolution of waterway and climate measurements in Luxembourg.

Join us for an extraordinary guided tour of this exhibition which is the result of a collaboration between the Section des Sciences de l'Institut grand-ducal, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and the National Museum of Natural History of Luxembourg.
