Actart Concert: Gestillte Sehnsucht
With his Kegelstatt Trio, Mozart composed in 1786 a chamber music masterpiece in a never-before-heard combination: clarinet, viola, and piano. Robert Schumann followed with his "Märchenerzählungen", another masterpiece that continues to inspire many composers. The charming, warm-toned sound blend of the clarinet and viola evokes longing in the listener but knows how to contrast.
German romantic Carl Reinecke transports us into a world of longing, poetry, dreams, and legends with his Trio in A major, a late work composed with a conscious look back. "The musical world will largely ignore my late works because I have not kept up with the times. However, I have remained true to my artistic ideals with full conviction." The Trio has, however, secured a place among the classics.
Dmitri Shostakovich and Jean Françaix, both children of the 20th century, created a unique musical language that defies categorization. Shostakovich's symphonies swing between heroism, horror, and hope, while his film music remains incredibly light and cheerful, as demonstrated by the Five Pieces arranged by his friend Levon Atovmian for two violins and piano. Françaix's Trio from 1990, a commissioned piece for the 300th anniversary of the clarinet, sparkles with liveliness and demands exceptional virtuosity from the musicians.
The words of poet Friedrich Rückert, set to music by Johannes Brahms for voice, viola, and piano in 1884, beautifully conclude our concert in a version for clarinet, viola, and piano.
