With or without words, only Purcell can make us experience so many different states in a single air, and convey with such depth the complexity of human emotions. Whether he depicts a woman in love, Mary the mother of Jesus, or a Siren straight out of mythology, Henry Purcell portrays a vivid image of female characters that still speak to us today about the essentials.
