On the first Sunday after Carnival, huge "Buergen" (firebrands) are lit all over the country to drive away the winter. Each municipality has its own "Buergbrennen". Traditionally, the entire municipality gathers to witness the lighting of the "Buerg". Typically, the firebrands are built by local youth clubs using combustible materials such as branches, tree trunks, straw and even old Christmas trees.
