The figure of the geisha in the opera Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the death of Maestro Giacomo Puccini, we chose to examine late-century Orientalism with an expert in the field, Dr. Lerz, a scientific collaborator of the Department of Yamology at the University of Trier. The analysis will focus on the central female figure, often misunderstood by the Western gaze, projecting only what it wants to see. Yet Butterfly, in her tragedy, reveals the hypocrisy of the Western male and rises above him through her powerful humanity.
