The European Union, a union of values? Incantation, illusions or reality?
The Treaty on the European Union states that it is founded on values such as human dignity, freedom, democracy, and the rule of law, aiming to promote them. These values are detailed in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, which has held the same legal force as the treaties since the Treaty of Lisbon. The scope and significance of these principles are questioned: Are they merely ceremonial, or an essential foundation to be upheld, promoted, and extended beyond European borders? In a time of global divisions on societal goals and structures, how can the European Union defend its values? Jean-Claude Bonichot, former French judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union, will provide his insights on these pressing issues.
