Adrien Ries (1933-1991) was a Luxembourg lawyer, economist and author. Between 1962 and 1986, he worked for the European Commission. In 1973, he was the first to mark the expression "Nordstad" to designate the agglomeration which includes the cities of Diekirch and Ettelbrück. Apart from numerous economic publications, he was mainly known to Luxembourgers for the publication of travel accounts and journals, as well as press articles. He was a passionate hiker and traveled thousands of kilometers on foot through the Grand Duchy and Europe. Thus, the 48km hiking trail that surrounds the six towns of the "Nordstad" would certainly have been to his liking!
