On the occasion of the release of the book Mr. Magendavid came to say hello to us…” A Liège story 1908-1945 by Rosita Winkler and Deborah Gol (Editions Territoires de la Mémoire, Liège, 2023).

With this sentence, “Mister Magendavid came to say hello to us…”, written on a postcard, Coussel Karny, a Lithuanian Jew immigrated to Liège and naturalized Belgian, informed his daughter, a refugee in Congo, of the obligation to wear the star YELLOW. Throughout the pages, Roswita Winkler and Déborah Gol follow in the footsteps of several lost generations. Through family archives, the unique destinies of the members of the Karny family emerge, tossed around the world, according to the upheavals of the 20th century. Léa Karny and Stanislas Gol managed to reach England at the start of the Second World War and it was there that the couple gave birth in 1942 to their son Jean, future Belgian Deputy Prime Minister.
