This extraordinary play tells the story of the career of a young stage artist, which begins at the time of the annexation of Austria to Nazi Germany in 1938.
Lola Blau goes into exile in America via Switzerland, becomes famous, loses her illusions and returns to Vienna after the war.
The play has lost none of its relevance since its premiere in 1971. The cabaret songs of the great composer, singer and poet Georg Kreisler (1922-2011) range from virtuoso comedy to touching tragedy. Lola Blau is the story of powerlessness. Lola is as helpless and powerless in the face of anti-Semitism as she is in the face of her own Jewishness. She is helpless against the stubborn Swiss, is indignant against the sex career in America and, in the end, she is once again powerless against the Austrians stuck in the past. All she wants to do is dance and sing a little and please her audience. But she must understand that there is no point in trying to conquer a small and modest place in the sun.
Above all, everyone must try to remove the obstacles that block the sun for themselves and their fellow human beings.
