American of Armenian origin, John Hodian, composer and pianist of the Naghash Ensemble, questions through his Songs of Exile the feeling of uprooting felt within his community and his family. A feeling that he found in the writings of the 15th century poet and priest Mkrtich Naghash, transfigured by three singers accompanied by the duduk, the oud, the dohol and the piano. Marrying the spirituality of Armenian folk and contemporary post-minimalism with unleashed jazz energy, the Naghash Ensemble expresses the spirit of ancient Armenia, reinvented for the 21st century.
