What would modern Armenian music have been without Vardapet (honorary title of the Armenian Apostolic Church) Komitas, theologian, musician, ethnomusicologist, tireless collector and scrutinizer of popular and religious Armenian musical traditions, arrested and deported on the night of April 24 1915 (date which marks the start of the Armenian Genocide)? His Armenian Miniatures place some of his most beautiful discoveries in superb musical settings. following him, a flourishing school of composers was able to flourish, notably Khachaturian, whose illustrious Waltz taken from his masquerade stage music can be heard here.
