Gustav Holst,Choral Hymns from the Rig Vedaop. 26 Group 3 H. 99Gustav Holst,The Planets,Suite for large orchestra op. 32 (arrangement by Laurent Beeckmans for 2 8-hand pianos, 2 percussionists and women's choir) This year we are celebrating the 150th birthday of the British composer Gustav Holst. A tribute is paid to him with an exceptional version of his most famous work, The Planets, arranged for two eight-handed pianos, percussion and choir. The Planets, a true UFO in the musical creation of the early 20th century, opened the way A spectacular and cinematic style which inspired, among others, John Williams, author of the Star Wars music. Holst began composing his major work in 1914, drawing inspiration from his passion for astrology and the characters of the different planets (without Pluto, discovered only in 1930) for each movement. Before looking to the heavens for inspiration, Holst looked to the Orient. He had launched himself with fascination into the study of the Rigveda, a collection of sacred hymns from ancient India, which he then translated himself from Sanskrit into English. Conceived in four groups, Holst wrote the third collection in 1910 for women's choir and harp or piano. As in The Planets, we find the main characteristics of his music: pronounced rhythmic ostinatos, interest in asymmetrical measures (Mars, Neptune, Hymn for the Travelers in 5 beats, Hymn to the Waters in 7 beats), quasi-mathematical rigor of the writing which is expressed in clear and precise structures, abandonment of romantic harmonic logic in favor of abrupt and unexpected modulations... but also, and despite all these modernist aspects, the taste for traditional English music which shines through especially in the central melody by Jupiter, which Holst himself transformed a few years later into a choral piece entitled I vow to Thee, my country.
