Christian Durand, a great explorer, passes the baton to his son Vassili. Together, they retrace the adventures they experienced more than 40 years ago, in Suriname and French Guiana. By restoring the images filmed by his father to the populations he had encountered, Vassili will make us discover a moving story, but also the multiple facets of this region nestled in the heart of the Amazonian forest.

THE MOVIE

In 1976, at the age of twenty, Christian Durand joined a team of explorers to go up the Tapanahoni, a river in the Suriname jungle in search of a forgotten tribe, the Oyaricoulets. Two years later, in 1978, he shot his first film on this quest. This adventure marked the beginning of a long career as a reporter-filmmaker. In July 1989, back in French Guiana, on the border of Suriname on the Maroni River, Christian Durand, thanks to his piroguier John Dimpaï, filmed Ronnie Brunswijk, the leader of the "jungle commandos", at the head of the Bushinengues, the descendants of slaves who escaped from the old Dutch plantations in the 19th century.

In 2023, after revisiting Cayenne and the coastline as far as Saint-Laurent du Maroni, in the company of his son Vassili, he decided to go and restore all these images. He followed Ronnie Brunswijk, who became Vice-President of Suriname in 2020, to discover the life of the Bushinengues in the interior, shared between traditional cultures and gold panning. In Paramaribo, the capital, on the coast, the Bushinengues now live alongside Hindu and Javanese populations from the former Dutch colonies. He was thus able to observe, with his son Vassili, the changes that these different communities have experienced. A story of transmission.
