Creature - jazz
Oktopus is a major figure on the North American world music scene, with over 300 performances in Canada and internationally to its credit. The group is primarily dedicated to klezmer music and stands out for its new approach that incorporates several elements from the classical, Quebecois and jazz repertoires. Original compositions and finely crafted arrangements rub shoulders with improvisation. Just as musicians of yesteryear incorporated into their repertoire the music they encountered on their travels, Oktopus draws inspiration from the music that has dotted its musicians' journeys. Thus, several classical composers such as Bartók, Brahms, Prokofiev and Enesco have their melodies rearranged by the octet, which focuses particularly on works derived from folk themes. Quebecois chansonniers, such as Félix Leclerc and Gilles Vigneault, are also sources of inspiration and are added to the group's repertoire. The eight virtuoso musicians offer a festive and wild show, as much as melancholic and profound, sprinkled with humor and stories. The complicity, passion and work of the ensemble contribute to making each of its performances memorable – whether they take place on stage, in the street, on a boat, in a hot air balloon or in your living room. It is… how to say… spectacular!
