As a child, I was fond of drawing. It has always brought me a lot of joy. The subjects of my paintings come from everyday objects. They are easy to find and familiar, embodying a sense of commonality and universality. I represent them in a photorealistic way to convey tranquillity and eternity. I also work with watercolours, painting landscapes, birds, insects, people, animals… All these subjects can be my theme. Before adopting a colourful style, I used to draw exclusively with a pencil. It’s a very simple medium that helps me to create a fantasy world. When you gaze at figures in painting, you’ll find abundant stories. Sometimes they look happy, excited, calm or nervous… It’s all quite magical. Like Jim Carrey in The Mask, standing in front of the mirror and saying: “It’s party time!” HSUAN-CHIH LEE
