For many centuries, Italy, with its abundance of art and culture and mild climate, has attracted artists from other, particularly northern countries. In the 17th century, these included many Dutch and Flemish artists, several generations of whom travelled to Italian cities to paint. From around 1640, some specialized in landscape painting, such as Jan Both, Adam Pynacker, and Jan Asselijn. The artists organized themselves into communities like the Roman Bentvueghels. Upon returning to the Netherlands, the Italians became successful. This exhibition presents works from the Dutch Italianate school.
