Songs inspired by Shakespeare. Shakespeare's writings are a universal source of inspiration for song composers. This recital focuses on 20th-century English and American musical settings of Shakespeare by Benjamin Britten, Michael Tippett, Roger Quilter, Madeleine Dring, Elisabeth Maconchy, Amy Beach, Alison Bauld, and Eric Coates, as well as Tudor and Jacobean England with musical settings by Henry Purcell arranged by Britten, and an excerpt from his opera, ‘Gloriana’. This music and these texts bring us exaltation and tragedy, lost and regained love, showing that the whole world is indeed a stage. Featuring Jonathan Hanley (tenor) and Gavin Roberts (piano).
