A very personal text by Hubert Védrine which reveals Albert Camus in an unexpected light. As a teenager, Hubert Védrine was dazzled by the Camus of 'Noces', 'L'Été' and 'L'Étranger'. Although life later took him in different directions, he never forgot Camus, and his encounters with René Char, Jean Daniel, and others regularly brought him back to Camus. Over time, Hubert Védrine felt the need to reread the entire work, to understand how Camus embodied and continues to embody an ethic of life, less based on morality than integrity, and how he can still "protect us from times without spirit". Thus, he was seized by the desire to engage with Camus in a sort of fraternal dialogue. This very personal text narrates these reunions that reveal the author in an unexpected light.
"Seized, I was by the simple beauty and sensuality of his Mediterranean words," writes Hubert Védrine. "I began my journey with Camus with this moment of beauty, pure and clear language, Hellenic and pantheistic sensuality. He never left me."
