November 2021, twenty-six royal treasures from Dahomey are set to leave the Musée du Quai Branly-Chaques Chirac to be repatriated to their land of origin, Benin, formerly Dahomey. Along with thousands of others, these works were looted during the French colonial invasion in 1892. But how to live the return of these ancestors in a country that had to build and cope in their absence? As the soul of the works is freed, debate rages among the students of the University of Abomey Calavi.

The documentary film Dahomey by Mati Diop was awarded the Golden Bear at the Berlinale 2024. The screening will be followed by a conference on the value and stakes of restitution, the meaning and significance of the looted works returned to their homeland, as well as the narrative structure of the documentary-fiction detailing the restitution of 26 works to Benin, the first wave of a series of returns.
