Hubert Védrine: Camus, our bulwark
"Camus, Our Bulwark"
Interview with Hubert Védrine
A very personal text by Hubert Védrine which reveals Albert Camus in an unexpected light. As a teenager, Hubert Védrine was dazzled by the Camus of Noces, L’Été, and L’Étranger. Although life later took him in different directions, he never forgot Camus.
"I was captivated by the simple beauty and sensuality of his Mediterranean words," writes Hubert Védrine. "My Camus journey began with this moment of beauty, pure and clear language, of Hellenic and pantheistic sensuality. He never left me."
Hubert Védrine was successively diplomatic advisor, spokesperson, and Secretary-General of the Élysée during François Mitterrand's two seven-year terms. In 1997, under the presidency of Jacques Chirac, he joined Lionel Jospin's government as Foreign Affairs Minister. He published the Dictionnaire amoureux de la géopolitique with Plon in 2021, which was a great success, and directed the volume Grands Diplomates published by Perrin in 2024.
William Irigoyen is a French journalist (ARTE: Lire, Geo Histoire, Radio espace 2) and presenter. On ARTE, he has been presenting the international magazine "Arte Reportage" since 2012, and "THEMA" evenings since February 2022.
