Così fan tutte - Theatre
In the vein of his unconventional rendition of Carmen, Dmitri Tcherniakov reaffirms his stance with a different interpretation of Mozart’s classic Così fan tutte, the last of the three Mozart-da Ponte operas. Departing from the original, outdated portrayal of two young men prompted to acrimoniously test their fickle fiancées’ loyalty, Tcherniakov presents two long-married couples in their fifties searching to recapture their initial passion by convening for a weekend of swinging. The hosts – a middle-aged couple with dubious motives – are there to conduct the role-playing games. While the luxurious space quickly becomes claustrophobic, couples are challenged to confront their own inconsistencies and the intricacies of their desire. Mozart’s buffoonery is nowhere to be found in this version of Così fan tutte, but instead Tcherniakov’s visionary approach offers a thought-provoking exploration of human relationships, love, and the inexorable passage of time.
