Lesson 2: GENRES

Between Clichés and Renewal: The Motif as a Matrix of Genres

By Hélène Valmary (Lecturer in film studies, University of Caen-Normandy) Film conference punctuated by film extracts | in French | 60'

"Film genres are nourished by numerous motifs that often characterize them. These motifs, which can be visual as well as auditory, are sometimes carried by actors and actresses for whom the genre is a particular space of acting conventions, codes, gestures and facial expressions that they inherit, that they incorporate, with which they play.

This conference will explore several cinematographic genres to see what motifs are present there, where they come from and what they become depending on the era and the actors/actresses who take them on, from the cats that accompany women of action to the screams that the 'scream queens' of horror cinema let out, including the aiming of the bad guys in the western and the detective film.. » (Hélène Valmary)
