Concrete symbols from his unique visual lexicon humorously challenge the abstraction central to his work, adding thematic layers that prompt viewers to question their perceptions. Harpes’ recent work explores rapid, performative techniques, inviting viewers into his exploration of free painting. Jo Malano’s pieces, known for their distinct use of natural motifs mixed with abstract elements, blend into vibrant interior worlds. Across murals, paintings, and various media, Malano unites contrasts into a cohesive whole. His technique, from fine, filigree lines to broad, vivid strokes, paints him as both artisan and creator, connecting him to a lineage of historical painters. From blossoming walls reminiscent of the French Douanier to wilder abstractions, Malano’s influences range widely; keen observers might spot the influence of a famed 19th-century Japanese woodcarver.
