Less than three years ago, German-American pianist Benjamin Lackner painted a sensitive portrait of the times with his album Last Decade, which was like a curative remedy for the challenges of the time.
Back with a newly formed quintet, brought together during a particularly fruitful 2024 session in the south of France, the pianist now presents a different facet of his approach as a composer that should help establish Lackner as a force to be reckoned with in the world of contemporary jazz.
Trumpeter Mathias Eick is the only one to return from Last Decade, Lackner's debut album, and he is now heard live in a striking dualism with Maciej Obara's saxophone dialect, a key feature of the interplay that permeates Spindrift.
The brass duo and pianist are joined by American bassist Harish Raghavan and French drummer Matthieu Chazarenc, who was part of Lackner's trio before the pianist worked for ECM.
