Dieter Borchmeyer, Amadeus Wiesensee: Thomas Mann and Beethoven
Thomas Mann and Beethoven - A search for traces in "Doktor Faustus"
Beethoven plays a central role in Thomas Mann's late novel Doktor Faustus. There are the lectures of the music scholar Wendell Kretzschmar, which are crucial for the artistic development of the novel's protagonist, the composer Adrian Leverkühn, culminating in the analysis of Beethoven's Piano Sonata Op. 111. Finally, there is Leverkühn's intention with his last work "Doctor Fausti Wehklag" to take back the Ninth Symphony with its final vocal jubilation, to counter the "Ode to Joy" with one to sorrow - leading to the fact that at the end of this work, the retraction is itself retracted.
