An avant-garde manifesto: The dada heads of Sophie Taeuber-Arp
Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889-1943) left a significant mark on avant-garde history with her abstract, geometric, rhythmic, and colorful compositions. Her education at the School of Arts and Crafts in Saint-Gall, Switzerland, and the Apprenticeship and Experimental Workshops for applied arts in Munich fostered her ability to create a true synthesis of the arts. Shortly after graduating, she became a teacher at the School of Applied Arts in Zurich, experimenting in fields such as tapestry, drawing, sculpture, and even costume, puppetry, and dance, inspired by Rudolf van Laban's pedagogy. She was involved in the Dadaist adventure and performed masked at the Cabaret Voltaire. Her ironic Tête DADA (1920) displays the richness of her research, parodying portrait art and standing as an original manifesto of the famous movement.
