The unprecedented career of the Hagen Quartet, already spanning four decades, began in 1981. The early years were marked by competition successes and an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon. Over these decades of collaboration, many recordings have been made to develop the almost infinite repertoire of the quartet, which has given rise to the unique profile of the Hagen Quartet. Subsequent recordings with myrios classics have also been praised by the international press and received major awards. A recording with Jörg Widmann and clarinet quintets by Widmann and Mozart has just been released. The Hagen Quartet has been an honorary member of the Vienna Konzerthaus since 2012 and received the Concertgebouw Amsterdam Prize in 2019 for its long-standing artistic impact. The quartet's repertoire consists of charming and intelligently combined programs that cover the entire history of the string quartet. Furthermore, the Hagen Quartet is dedicated to creating works by composers of its generation. Collaboration with artists such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt and György Kurtág has always been as important to the Hagen Quartet as joint concerts with Maurizio Pollini, Mitsuko Uchida, Krystian Zimerman, Heinrich Schiff, Jörg Widmann, Kirill Gerstein, Sol Gabetta, and Gautier Capuçon. For many young string quartets, the Hagen Quartet is a model in terms of sound quality, stylistic diversity, ensemble playing, and serious study of works and composers of their genre. As professors and mentors at the Mozarteum Salzburg, Hochschule Basel, and international masterclasses, they pass on this great experience to their young colleagues. The Hagen Quartet plays on old Italian master's instruments. After the concerts of the "world-class four strings of Salzburg", there is "an absolute silence for nearly minutes, aware of having experienced something extraordinary", as described by the press. All listeners share "the only wish that it never ends".
