In the performative version of "Water is a Time Machine", Aline Motta continues her exploration of the intersections between literature and visual arts, archives and fabulation, memory and the silence of forgetfulness. The artist stages her family members and traces of their lives in Rio de Janeiro at the turn of the 20th century, a period of political turmoil that immediately followed the abolition of slavery, in order to show how colonial history fractured the Brazilian population.
