This exhibition constitutes a true journey through time, offering a detailed overview of Luxembourg libraries from the 16th to the 19th century. It explores documentary history from an unprecedented perspective, through masterpieces from the special collections of the National Library of Luxembourg. The exhibition highlights the diversity of historical libraries, from monastic and ecclesiastical collections to private libraries of figures such as Pierre Roberti (circa 1566-1636) or Pierre-Ernest de Mansfeld (1517-1604). The tour also emphasizes the influence of notable personalities such as Jean-Baptiste Halle (1748-1824) and Dominique-Constantin Munchen (1763-1818), whose efforts have marked the documentary history of the country. Special attention is paid to printed books, often overshadowed by manuscripts, seen as more spectacular. In this context, various aspects related to the material object are highlighted: the authors, the subjects covered, the dedicatees, the social groups consulting them, the traces of use, or the provenances. These data testify to the value and use of these precious books.
